Talent Trends: Big to Boutique

Why More Consultants Are Making the Move

Australia’s consulting market is undergoing a notable shift. Increasingly, experienced consultants from larger Big 4 firms are transitioning to smaller consultancies – and for good reason.

We’ve had many conversations with people making the move. We think this could be why:

  • More Impact, Less Red Tape – In a smaller team, your work isn’t just a drop in the ocean. You get to own projects, work closely with clients, and actually see the impact of what you do.
  • Specialised, Meaningful Work – Instead of being spread thin across industries, mid-sized consultancies let you focus on building deep expertise in the areas that matter to you.
  • Culture & Vibe – A lot of people are saying they’re looking for a workplace that values collaboration, flexibility, and real work-life balance—not just in a corporate slogan, but in practice.
  • Real Career Growth – Without the rigid structures of a large firm, people find they progress faster and develop in ways that align closer to their goals instead of the companies goals.

It’s clear that the appeal of smaller consultancies is growing again, despite uncertanty with an upcoming election. This evolution reflects the value proposition offered by smaller to mid-sized consultancies – in relation to Government procurement needs of specialised resources.

Let us know your thoughts? What’s appealing to you about a smaller firm, or larger? Have you noticed a shift in what your colleagues are looking for in their next role?
